189 steps to one of Sweden's most beautiful views 🏰 Every day people climb the Terrace Stairs up towards the fortress tower Kärnan and it is also here the newly graduated students tumbles down each year after exams. Few stop to think that this staircase was once just a bold idea. Back in the late 1800s, the way up to Helsingborg's most iconic lookout was steep and awkward. As the city grew, someone asked a simple question: what if the walk up could be an experience in itself? The answer became the Terrace Stairs. King Oscar II inaugurated them in 1903, just in time for that summer's big Industry and Handicraft Exhibition in Slottshagen. Suddenly there was a new path between Stortorget and the tower, but also a new place to meet, pause, and take in the view. Bankpalatset: Helsingborg's grand old bank palace pours its first glass! ✨✨ There is a moment, standing under the newly opened dome at Bankpalatset, when you understand exactly why Simon and Henrietta Weinberg couldn't let this building go. The light falls differently, shimmers and is cascading lightly on the interior. The room is grand without trying to be, and the old bank hall – for decades hidden behind a lowered ceiling – suddenly breathes again. "We wanted to bring back the grandeur," Simon says. "It's airier now, more generous – a wink to what this place used to be." The building itself is part of the draw: completed in 1884 on Järnvägsgatan, once home to the Hotel Continental and a string of bank vaults. The couple arrives with a serious pedigree; NOMA, Bagatelle and Operakällaren, the acclaimed Bokbacka in Oslo, and their White Guide awarded Weinbergs Hotell outside Trelleborg. After the countryside, the pull back to a city was strong. ”We missed the city," Henriette says. "Helsingborg has such life – the buzz, the closeness to Denmark, the pedestrian street right outside." Under one roof there's a restaurant, a wine and aperitivo bar, cocktail bars and a sun-soaked terrace with an all-day menu. Lunch is honest classics; evenings turn into a European brasserie. Everything is made from scratch and sourced locally where possible, from a signature truffle schnitzel on pork neck to a proper burger. The wine list is one the broadest in town, and the cocktail of the moment, fittingly, is called "Unlock the Safe." The couple scouted the spot in deep winter. Their logic was simple: "If it's alive in January, it works all year round."
