The rhododendrons at Sofiero Castle and Gardens are on their way 🌿 Not quite in full bloom yet – but something is shifting. Buds are swelling, colors are beginning to emerge, and the garden is quietly preparing for one of its most spectacular moments. ✨✨ Over 100 years ago, Crown Princess Margareta, originally from the UK, saw the potential of Sofiero’s two ravines as the perfect home for rhododendrons. In 1907, she brought back a single plant from her childhood home, Bagshot Park. That very plant, a Rhododendron catawbiense, was placed where the ravines meet. It still flowers there today. In the 1930s, King Gustav VI Adolf began building the collection into what it is now – one of the finest in Europe. Today, Sofiero is home to more than 10,000 rhododendrons, spanning around 450 species and hybrids, many originally brought from East Asia by early plant explorers.
